Rev MacFarlane’s 25th Anniversary

A fine photo of Baile na Cille kirk session. Taken in 1976 at the 25th Anniversary presentation for Rev Angus Macfarlane, Baile na Cille. Rev Macfarlane retired in 1979, at which point the congregation merged with that of the Miavaig church.

Stac Dhomhnaill Chaim in 1849

This drawing of Stac Dhomhnaill Chaim – the fortified rock on the Mangersta coast, in which Donald Cam Macaulay lived – is from 1849 and shows the crumbly access to the stack even then.

The State of Weaving in 1900

The Congested Districts Board established a Lewis committee, and this is their 1900 report on the state of, and proposed improvements to, the tweed industry. Note a couple of references to Uig, which was obviously considered particularly ‘deserving’.

Doors Open Day at Baile na Cille Church

Baile na Cille Church in Uig will be opened to the public for two days in September as part of the 21st Doors Open Days event in Scotland.

Improvements at Kinlochroag

The B8011 at the Kinlochroag bridge is currently being resurfaced, which we’re all very pleased about. The two-span bridge over the water at the head of Little Loch Roag and re-routing of the road was done in 1995-96, as this souvenir guide attests.

Berserker Seeks New Home

The Uig Chessmen, found here on Traigh Uig in 1831, are returning to Uig for a single day on 13 September 2011. To mark the occasion, Uig Community Centre and the Comann Eachdraidh are raffling a Berserker.

The Valtos Centre, based in the old Valtos School from shortly after it was closed, was first used in 1972 and developed over a couple of years until a visit there became a major fixture in the educational calendar for island pupils, and for scout groups and the like from further afield.

Hens of 1908

The Congested Districts Board took an interest in poultry farming in the crofting parishes and in 1908 a Commission proceeded around Scotland taking evidence from many involved in the trade. On 22 July of that year they were in Uig, interviewing Mr & Mrs Duncan Maclean of Gisla Farm.
