1266 - Tighearnas nan Eilean (1266 – 1493) – Lords of the Isles (1266 – 1493)
The Western Isles now came under the control of the Lords of the Isles, based in Islay and remaining fairly independent of the Scottish Crown for another 227 years. The people were the original Gal Gaels, and were allied to Clan Macdonald of Islay. The main clans in Lewis were the Macleods, the Macaulays and the Morrisons, and there were constant clashes between them. John Macdonald II (4th Lord) allied with Edward III, King of England, against James III of Scotland, but was betrayed and stripped of his title and lands.
