7000BC - Meadhan-linn na Cloiche – Mesolithic (9000 – 6000 years ago)

The first humans, hunter gatherers, would have arrived in dugout or skin boats. No evidence of houses or temporary shelters has been found because the coastline at the time, has now been drowned by rising sea levels. At Traigh na Beirigh they arrived each autumn to catch cuddies (young saithe), gather shellfish, catch birds and hares, and to roast hazelnuts. The midden material at Gridig was mainly seashells, discarded 6,500 years ago. After eating their fill they would move on to another location.
