1832 - Cosnadh san Talamh Fhuar – Hudson’s Bay Co

Several Uig men joined the Hudson’s Bay Company, which was founded in 1670 by King Charles to exploit the natural resources of the North American colonies.

Men from Lewis were recruited as “they were found to be very hardy and able to carry on in the severe work of trading … and more capable of making friends with the Indians than any other group of people.”

Some married and stayed on in Canada, others returned.
