1849 - Saothrachadh airson Min nam Bochd (1849 – 50) – Working for Destitution Meal (1849 – 1850)

“After the potato failed the estate introduced work-schemes for which people were paid between 10d and 1/ and ‘committee meal’ … Old men, women and children worked a ‘gang system’. Of the money paid on the contracts, one third was to go towards payment of rent; and of the money paid to the gang, one half.”

MacNeill Report, 1851

The work schemes were perceived as another instrument of repression, offering no real possibility for improvement other than the modification of debt to the proprietor.
