1883 - Coimisean Napier – The Napier Commission

Crofter unrest throughout the Highlands and Island gained political expression through the Highland Land Law Reform Association (HLLRA) forcing the government to intervene in crofting affairs. It established the Napier Commission which, in 1883, took evidence across the Highlands and Islands, providing the most reliable first-hand accounts of what had transpired. The Commission’s report exposed blatant inequalities and injustices perpetrated by the landlords against the crofting population and recommended sweeping reforms of the crofting system.
