1870 - Bho Thuathan Chaorach gu Frìthean Fèidh – Sheep Farms to Sporting Estates
In the 1870s Grimersta and Uig Lodge became sporting estates. By then up to 40,000 acres of Uig was in the hands of seven tenants. The new trend was perceived as a blatant misuse of land with valuable grazings being given over to the sport of a privileged few.
By 1880 up to thirty landless families lived on sub-divided crofts in Valtos and Breanish and fifteen to twenty in the smaller townships.
