The Old Statistical Account tells of a fairly prosperous community engaged at kelp-making and fishing.

On Cliatasay, a small island off carishader, rough pits and deep moorings show evidence of kelp-harvesting in Loch Roag. The remains of a kelp kiln are still visible on the point in Vuia Mhor.
