Iolaire Commemoration
Iolaire Disaster Commemoration in Uig Community Centre, 2nd January,2019.
At the event family members spoke about their relative who were lost in the disaster and lit candles in their memory. The Act of dedication of the Uig Community commemorative wall hanging, the war memorial Epitaph by Donald MacIver, Crowlista, the Memorial Stone and Uig School Memorial was led by the Very Rev. The commemoration event was organised by the local Iolaire working group, led by Anna Stewart, Comunn Eacdraidh Uig and Uig Community Centre Assocation.
The publicity poster for the events was designed by Rhona MacLeod Uigean based on original artwork by Malcolm MacLean,Timisgarry. The constellation symbolise the ten men who drowned and the two who survived. The colours refer to the darkest night and the light the closeness of home.
Ten Uig men were lost in the Iolaire Disaster. A series of events that will take place in Uig between the 31st of December and the 2nd of January have been organised by the local Iolaire working group to commemorate their lives.
