Visitors to the museum and archive are warmly welcomed. The facility, in the community centre in Uig, is open Monday to Saturday, 12-5pm, from May to mid-September, and visits at other times can be arranged on request. Out of opening hours, please contact Joni (01851) 672274 or Teen Anne (01851) 672363 and we will gladly open up for you.
As an entirely voluntary organisation we do not maintain a staffed office, but would be pleased to help with genealogical or other enquiries if we can. You may also like to consult Hebridean Connections, our online database project, where all known Uigeachs from about 1450 onward are gradually being subjected to the indignity of digitisation!

Hi Joan – thanks for that – we’d love to have them. I’ll give you a ring.
Hello,
I found your very interesting website by accident and was surprised to find a photograph of my father Donald Macleod in the Valtos school collection, 1928-29.
I have some photograph of him in uniform during the 2nd World War. If you are interested in expanding your ‘in uniform’ collection I could scan one and send it along.
I hope to return for a visit soon and would love to see your museum.
Best wishes and thanks for the the hard work in keeping the memories of the past generations alive.
Anna Macleod. Ireland
Hello Anna,
Are you the same Anna Macleod in Ireland I have been corresponding with regarding the Macleod genealogy of my wife ??
It is the branch of the Lewis Macleods which in other publication are referred to as the Macleods of Pabbay and Uig.
In the meantime we have been able (with the help of others) to find more branches (Borrowston for instance) to that family .
Sincere regards,
Gerard Lemmens, Wadhurst, East Sussex
Hi,
I am a weaver based in South Africa. We produce fabrics woven on domestic circular box looms and need to purchase shuttles and pirns to enable us carry on weaving with these looms. Is there any one who can help us locate these items.
Stuart.
Hi there greetings from Dorset,
Do you have any information on a Jennifer Thorpe from St Marys, in Ontario I think who was trying to track down relatives in Uig. I am possibly related to her on the Ungeshader side of the Family. I know she was in touch with Donald Maciver from Crowlista. Was she in touch with the Comunn Eachdraidh? If you can help me in any way I’d be most grateful. It would be great to get in touch with her. Keep up the sterling work you do at the Comunn Eachdraidh. Le Gach Dhurachd. Iain M Macleod (Geshader, Uig).
This is a very exciting, informative and interesting site please keep it updated. I come from Ardroil although working abroad.
Ardroil Ardroil that’s where I grew up, amongst the worthies that meant so much, I grew up with them and now they are few.
Our fathers came from the war when I was a child. I had no understanding of human unkind. This still prevails in this world you can see, should I be left in peace Ardroil is for me.
Hello to all very good website truly impressed.
The photo of Valtos school 1908 I have seen upon your site a named version showing edited names of the children against facelss images may I have a copy of that named image please.
My interest is John Macleod of 12 Valtos, Internee at Gronighen Camp.. Benbow Bn, RND.
Thank you sincerely.

I own 5 Kirkibost where I have built a house. On site I also have a white house/connected black house all of which are in fair condition. Where can I get more information about the history of these houses and farming/crofting activities of these buildings?
Thank you so much for your website. it has been great in trying to research my husbands family who most of them seem to live in Breanish. The person we are really interested in finding out about is his grandfather John Buchanan. he was born in 1895 in 14 Breanish and died at sea in 1932. any information you could give us would be greatly appreciated as he has lost touch with his extended family.
I was at R.A.F. Aird Uig from October1957 through till September 1962, apart from an absence of nine months in 1961, when on a Ground Radar Fitter’s course.
I remember all the episodes described elsewhere on your wonderful website.
There are a couple of minor errors, as regards the names of Commanding Officers however. Sqn. Ldr Liskutin was the C.O. when I first arrived (You have him down as Naskutin). The next C.O was Sqn.Ldr Evans (not Evens).
I still bear a minor scar on my upper left leg, from when the latter had us removing boulders from the domestic site!! Whilst throwing a large boulder onto the truck, my foot caught under another rock and I pulled a thigh muscle. This resulted in my being admitted to sick quarters for a week, where the medic (described elsewhere on your website), overcooked my leg with the infrared lamp!!
Hello,
in tracing my paternal family tree, I have come to know that a large proportion of our family lived in and close to this area. I have managed to trace potential family members back to John MacLeod in 1771. I would appreciate any help or assistance you might be able to provide in completing our family tree – we have a lot of questions.
Please do get in touch if you would be able to help!
Thank you very much
Hopefull,
Kelly
